High-rise dwellers ‘still not safe’ after Grenfell disaster
THE Government has failed to ensure people are safe in their homes after the Grenfell Tower disaster, MPs warn.
A proposed flammable cladding ban for new high-rises must apply to existing buildings, and sprinklers should be fitted, they urge.
The construction industry is “riven with conflicts of interest” such as builders choosing their own inspectors, the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee said in a report. The fire at Grenfell Tower in London on June 14 last year killed 72 people. Chairman Clive Betts said: “More than a year on, we are no closer to having a system that inspires confidence that residents are safe.” The committee said it was disappointed short-term changes to guidance had not been made and called for an update before the end of the year.
