Police officers hold up dustbin lids and wooden crates during a stand-off with revellers at the Notting Hill carnival. After discoverin­g pick-pockets in the crowd, officers took a heavy-handed approach and the event descended into violence and looting. Over 1,000 police broke up the carnival and around 60 people were arrested. The riot took place amid simmering racial tension between immigrants and far-right groups.
