Murray in Verdasco ‘liar’ rant

- FROM GAVIN BERRY in New York

ANDY MURRAY accused Fernando Verdasco of lying as his US Open row rumbled on, following his second-round exit.

Murray claimed the Spaniard broke the rules by talking to his coaching team during the 10-minute heat break on Wednesday.

That is against tournament rules and Murray complained to supervisors and the umpire after spotting Verdasco in discussions.

Verdasco hit back at Murray’s claim and denied any rule breach as he insisted he only spoke to fellow player Marcos Baghdatis and the Cypriot’s coach. The Spaniard said: “Obviously, if Andy says that, I don’t want to say that he lies, but I didn’t talk one word with my coach or any one member of my team. I know exactly the rule and I don’t want to be the one breaking it.”

But Murray took to his Instagram page to continue the row and suggest Verdasco was lying.

He wrote: “I’m off to get a health check as apparently I’ve been imagining things. #liarliarpantsonfire.”

Murray admitted the rules must be made clearer after he was heard telling the umpire, “Verdasco is in the locker-room with both coach and trainer – the referee and supervisor are twiddling their thumbs.”

He added: “I had to tell them because no one knows the f ****** rules.”

Former world No.1 Murray admitted the defeat – which, along with Cameron Norrie’s exit, left no British interest – reinforced doubts he can get back to his very best.
