Worker jailed for arson at Amazon site

- BY MARTIN FRICKER

AN employee who torched an Amazon warehouse after being refused time off to sort out his love life has been jailed for four years.

Adris Ali, 22, used a cigarette to start the fire, which caused £8million of damage to stock and the premises at Rugeley, Staffs.

CCTV and rota records identified him as the prime suspect. Stafford crown court heard more than 1,200 staff were evacuated.

Ali, of Walsall, West Mids, admitted arson.

More than 600,000 units were damaged, resulting in a loss of £7.3million.

Amazon said the repair, clean-up and labour costs were a further £745,000.

Ali was told by Judge Michael Chambers that he had “put lives at genuine risk” by starting the fire in November.
