RASHID GETS IN ON THE ACT WITH BALL OF THE NEW CENTURY

- BY DEAN WILSON

ADIL RASHID delivered the ball of the 21st century after five Test matches spent largely looking on.

The leggie (left, being hugged by Jonny Bairstow) was a surprise pick to take on India after he had given up playing red-ball cricket for Yorkshire.

And after a quiet series, he sprang into life in the final hour of the final day to spin the ball from wide outside the leg stump, across KL Rahul to flick his off bail, before getting rid of fellow century maker Rishabh Pant. The Rahul dismissal sparked memories of Shane Warne’s “ball of the century” that stunned England’s Mike Gatting in the 1993 Ashes.

“It was a brilliant ball from Rashid,” said his skipper Joe Root.

“Rash has that in him and that is why he is in the team. He has the ability to change games and he got us into a position to go on and win the game.”
