- BY RUKI SAYID Consumer Editor

DISAPPEARING Cashpoints CONSUMER groups are fighting the removal of free cashpoints as it was revealed they are vanishing at a rate of 250 a month.

They fear communities will lose access to cash.

ATM network Link said there was a 2% drop from 54,500 to 53,200 from the end of January to July.

Among those lost were 21 “protected” machines in remote areas with no other way of getting money.

Watchdog Which? said the losses were “alarming”.

And Positive Money said “whole communities” would lose access to cash.

MP Nicky Morgan said the loss of protected ATMs was “a worrying trend”.

Link said it was reviewing the 21 closures.

It added that shoppers were using cards not notes.
