1976: Derby became the first British club to score 12 goals in a European match when they beat Ireland’s Finn Harps 12-0 in a UEFA Cup tie. 1984: Lester Piggott broke Frank Buckle’s record of 27 Classic wins when he rode Commanche Run to victory in the St Leger. 1985: Tony Jacklin’s European team inflicted defeat on the Americans in the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years at The Belfry. 2003: England Test batsman and wicketkeep­er Alec Stewart (left) retired from first-class cricket. 2005: Frank Hadden was confirmed as Scotland’s new coach. 2011: Lancashire won the County Championsh­ip Division One title after they beat Somerset by eight wickets.
