Bacon prices could rise as pig fever hits

- BY RUKI SAYID Consumer Editor

THE cost of bacon is threatened by an outbreak of African swine fever in China, say experts.

Trade journal The Grocer said the fever, first detected last month, has hit more than 18 farms and abattoirs in six provinces.

With farmers forced to cull herds, the pork-loving nation may well turn to Britain for supplies.

Higher demand from China coupled with fears that the heatwave has hit pig fertility in the UK could mean a 300g pack of unsmoked back bacon rising from £1.75 to £1.80.

The UN Food and Agricultural Organisation fears the disease will spread.

Its chief vet Juan Lubroth said: “What we’re seeing so far is just the tip of the iceberg.”
