Navy assault ships saved from the axe

-

CAMPAIGNERS last night won a battle to save two Royal Navy assault ships.

Retired senior officers warned scrapping Albion and Bulwark to cut costs would leave Britain unable to launch beach raids or help with disaster relief.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: “The Royal Marines need to be able to bring the fight from the sea to the land.”

He also said British troops would stay in Germany beyond 2020.

Meanwhile Britain is to send up to 800 troops to the Arctic to counter increased Russian activity.

A base will be built to watch submarine activity.
