This is my wife’s uncle, Edward George Bartholomew, who was killed on HMS Invincible which was sunk by two German warships in the Battle of Jutland on May 31, 1916. She sank in 90 seconds with the loss of 1,026 lives, including Edward’s. He lived in Hartlepool which was shelled by the Germans in 1914 and which may have spurred him on to join the Army first and then the Navy. Why Edward left the Army for the Navy is a mystery, but we believe he also saw active service on the Western Front.
