Students ban ‘stressful’ applause .... and replace it with jazz hands
A STUDENTS’ union has voted to ban clapping at its events because it could trigger anxiety.
Manchester University students should instead use the British Sign Language silent way of showing appreciation by waving “jazz hands”.
The motion to the union’s policymakers from Liberation and Access Officer Sara Khan won the 66% backing needed but was derided and ridiculed on social media.
Piers Morgan tweeted: “Britain’s losing its mind,” while Jeremy Vine posted: “Glad some brave souls decided to ignore the difficulties caused by sudden noises 100 years ago.”
One user who has severe anxiety wrote: “What next, ban children laughing? You’re catering to illness instead of helping people get over it.”
A Students’ Union spokeswoman said jazz hands applause helped “those with disabilities and/or sensory conditions”, adding: “We should all aspire to improve our public spaces so that all members of society feel comfortable and able to contribute fully.”
