Rubbish piles up at Petticoat Lane Market in London’s East End as a result of wildcat strikes by dustmen. As shoppers went about their business, pickets were on duty to make sure nothing was removed. The strike in support of a pay increase from £15 to £20 per week began on September 23 and eventually spread to other parts of the country.
