The wreckage of a steam train at the scene of Britain’s worst peacetime rail disaster in which 112 people died. The pile-up involved three trains during rush hour at Harrow and Wealdstone, North West London. At 8.29am a Perth express hit the rear of a local passenger service. Seconds later another express, travelling at 60mph in the opposite direction, smashed into the Perth train whose driver had passed a danger signal. The reason was never establishe­d as he died and his fireman in the crash.
