COMEDY
THE BISEXUAL C4, 10pm
In this new comedy drama set in London, New Yorker Leila is in a seemingly perfect relationship with girlfriend and business partner Sadie.
Which means, of course, that’s it’s not remotely perfect and is all set to fall to pieces at any moment.
Co-written by Iranian-American filmmaker Desiree Akhavan, who plays Leila, and also starring Maxine Peake as Sadie, it’s described as “painfully funny”. Think dark humour rather than laugh out loud gags.
Leila has a secret – she’s bisexual – even though she declares to her mates: “I think bisexuality is a myth, created by ad executives to sell flavoured vodka.”
Realising that she’s living a lie, Leila makes a drastic decision, going “on a break” from Sadie.
What follows is a relationship drama which explores the difference between dating men and women, from the perspective of a person who, for the first time, finds herself doing both.
Also starring Brian Gleeson, Saskia Chana and Michèlle Guillot, this has some telling observations.
