Elton won’t keep mum over fallout

Daily Mirror - - WATTS THE GOSS -

IT was one of the biggest feuds in showbiz, and now Elton John’s troubled relationship with his late mum will be tackled in a new biopic about his life.

The star healed his nine-year rift with Sheila Farebrother before she died aged 92 last December.

And now Elton’s husband David Furnish, 55, an executive producer on the film, says: “The story tells the themes of Elton’s life and what guided it from the very beginning up to becoming a big star, and all of the troubles he had along the way.

“It’s about the early days of his career and his mother was pivotal to all of that.”

Sheila will be played by Bryce Dallas Howard, 37, while Taron Egerton, 28, stars as Elton.

The singer, 71, got back in touch with Sheila, nine years after they fell out following an argument when he told her to cut off contact with his former personal assistant Bob Halley and former manager turned lover John Reid.

Sheila refused, telling him: “Bob is like a son to me,” before Elton flew into an expletive-filled rage.

“Then to my utter amazement,” Sheila previously explained, “he told me he hated me... then banged the phone down. Imagine! To me, his mother!”

But Sheila’s desire to rebuild relations was most telling when she invited an Elton impersonator to perform at her 90th birthday party.

When she died in December she left two ceramic urns for Elton while Bob was left with half her fortune.

Elton’s former manager John Reid, at the heart of the rift, will be played by Richard Madden, 32, who David reckons is “one of the standout actors of his generation”.

Speaking at the Virgin Holidays Attitude Awards, he adds: “It goes without saying he is a handsome man. He hasn’t met Elton yet but their paths will cross soon.”
