Thank you for sorting my swing out, sister

Schoolgirl’s heartfelt plea to council chiefs brings joy for her disabled twin

DISABLED schoolboy Isaac Gwynne had fun in the park yesterday – thanks to his battling twin sister.

Naomi, eight, had been disappointed to see there were no swings suitable for Isaac in their local playground.

Determined he would not miss out, she sent a touching letter to council chiefs to ask them to “not forget” Isaac.

Her plea won a quick response and the family were amazed and delighted to see a fully accessible swing set had been installed in the park in Hamilton.

Isaac, who attends Victoria Park School in Carluke, has autism and learning difficulties and doesn’t know to hold on to the ropes of a traditional swing.

Because he is visually impaired, he also likes to feel the swing against him.

In her letter to South Lanarkshire Council, the Beckford Primary pupil wrote: “Dear Park Builders, I like the new park but please could you make a disabled swing for it?

“Isaac my twin brother is too big for a baby swing and can’t hold on to the bars of the grown-up swings. His favourite thing is a swing and we are both sad. Why did you forget about him? I have drawn a swing he would like. Thank you. Naomi Gwynne, aged 8.”

Mum Miriam, 40, said: “We are delighted and so excited to see the swing.

I cried when I first saw it. This will make a huge difference to Isaac. He will be so happy to be able to do what his twin sister has been doing.”

The proud parent said she couldn’t believe that her daughter’s letter had struck a chord with so many people who shared it on social media.

She added: “The twins are very close. Naomi understands her brother more than anyone else. She always goes out of her way for him and he adores her.”

Alistair McKinnon, the council’s head of facilities, said: “We are delighted we were able to help and hope that Naomi and Isaac can both continue to enjoy the play area and its facilities.”
