AFTER BOY LOST PART OF AN EAR IN DOG ATTACK

Faces. I was worried about the psychologi­cal effect.

“About two or three weeks after he left the hospital and the bandage came off, his ear was still very raw and he still had black stitches round it. We went to the science centre.

“A girl of about 15 was staring at Ryan. She pushed her way through people to stare and started questionin­g him, ‘What is up with your ear’?”

Later the girl tried to remove him from a play area to look at his ear and called friends over to see it.

Claire said: “Thankfully it has never happened again and so far we have not had anyone being nasty but a lot of people do stare at him.” Changing Faces have helped Ryan deal with the attention and have gone into his primary school, St John Bosco in Erskine, to do workshops.

Claire said: “It has helped the children learn… it is who you are inside that counts. That’s a great message to get out to schools.”
