May not ready for Brexit talks

-

TODAY is June 19. This was the day that Theresa May was telling us about all through the election campaign, remember?

It’s the day that the crucial Brexit negotiations are due to begin.

The Prime Minister said she needed a whopping great majority in the House of Commons for people in Brussels to give her a good deal on Brexit.

She told voters that only she could provide the “strong and stable” leadership needed to take the UK through this process.

As the big day arrives, it’s safe to say it hasn’t turned out that way.

With the Tories bringing political chaos to the country yet again, the UK Government will begin the Brexit negotiations today with no mandate, no plan, and no consensus about what they want to achieve.

So, the time is running out for them to start building that consensus.

A head of steam has been building up over the last few days over calls for a genuine, four-nation approach to Brexit.

The CBI have joined calls by myself and Labour’s Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones to ensure the devolved administrations are given a seat at the Brexit table.

All of us want to see the UK get the best possible Brexit deal – and frankly the Tories have shown that they are not capable of achieving that on their own.

We don’t need a Brexit deal which appeases the Tory right wing – we need one which works for Scotland.
