Mums in the dark on risk of infection
TWO-THIRDS of new mums and pregnant women were not properly informed about an infection that kills one baby every week in the UK, according to a poll.
A charity found just one in three were aware of the risks of Group B Strep, which can cause meningitis, septicaemia and pneumonia.
Two newborns every day develop the infection.
The Group B Strep Support charity said: “It must be the responsibility of all health professionals to inform new and expectant mums of the risks of Group B Strep. Too many women are being let down”
The charity are calling for the NHS to screen for the infection and are working on an information leaflet for maternity units.
