IONA’S A CATCH
Her hat-trick of 100-pounders is new British record AGE 14
IONA Campbell has been fishing all her life – but she’s still reeling after catching three monsters in as many months.
The 26-year-old optician is believed to be the first woman in the UK to catch three fish weighing 100lb or more in such a short space of time. She landed a 128lb blue shark and a 100lb porbeagle off the coast of Wales on a fishing holiday in July – then caught a 152lb skate off the isle of Kerrera last month.
Iona, from Oban, said: “I am only 5ft 3in and I weigh about nine-and-a-half stone and the blue shark was 6ft to the tip of the V so, including the tail, it was probably another foot on top of that.
“It’s hard work but once the adrenalin kicks in, you can achieve anything. I love the buzz you get from it.
“Slow and steady wins the race. I am never in any rush to get them in.”
She added: “Skate bury themselves in the sand. You are in 500ft of water, so it’s a lot of effort to get them off the bottom. It’s tiring.”
Iona has been fishing since she was a toddler and her biggest catch was a 174lb skate when she was just 14.
Her dad Ronnie, who runs fishing trips, said: “We think this is the first time a woman has caught three over 100lb in British waters in a year.”
