He sang: “There are some here who are hellbent on the destructio­n of the welfare state” rather than, “I could never make my mind up, as it all goes whizzing by”. Glenn said: “I think he may have been told about it by one of his team. To be fair to him, there were no monitors so I doubt he heard.

“It’s people like him who don’t care about the role that properly maintained social housing can play in our society.

This year, Chris also played at Glastonbur­y, joining former Squeeze member turned TV music host Jools Holland, who was playing with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.

Next year will be the 40th anniversar­y of Squeeze’s self-titled debut so, could we see the old band reform with Jools for a tour? Glenn smiled: “Never say never." For now though the band include old hands Simon Hanson on drums and Stephen Large on keyboards and new faces Yoland Charles on bass and Steve Smith on percussion. Glenn said: “The new line-up is really exciting.” ● The Knowledge by Squeeze is out today. Squeeze play Usher Hall, Edinburgh. on October 31 and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on November 3.
