A THUG was convicted yesterday of trying to kill a man who tried to stop his car being stolen.

Steven Payne reversed the Volkswagen Polo towards Andrew O’Donnell as he lay on the road during the incident in April this year.

Andrew, 26, had earlier clung on desperately to his car after Payne and a partner stole the keys from his home in Paisley.

He told jurors: “If I had not jumped on to the pavement, I would have been under the car.”

Payne, also of Paisley, had denied attempted murder.

He claimed he reversed the car to try to collect his partner, who he had left behind at the scene.

The 37-year-old, who was convicted after a trial at the High Court in Glasgow, faces a lengthy jail term when he is sentenced in January.
