Hoopschief: Lions fundis ‘fittinglegacy’
DEMENTIA care tops the list of causes that will benefit from Celtic’s £2million fundraising campaign marking the Lisbon Lions’ 50th anniversary. The family of European Cup-winning captain Billy McNeill announced earlier this year the heartbreaking news the Hoops legend is suffering from the disease. In revealing details of the plans that will see charities profit from the Lions Legacy Project funds, Celts chief Peter Lawwell believes it’s a fitting way to honour the 1967 heroes. He said: “We wanted to do something special to mark this very special year and we think what we have done is a fitting legacy to the Lions and all their achievements. “It also shows the importance of Celtic’s social dimension, which will always be fundamental to everything we do. “Now the work begins on making a positive difference to the lives of so many people in need, through the delivery of these excellent projects.” The money raised from May’s fundraising drive will help the Celtic Foundation to provide therapeutic relief for patients and offer respite for carers as the club teams up with Alzheimer Scotland. Another ‘67 Kitchens’ project in partnership with Mary’s Meals will see the Hoops build 67 sustainable school feeding areas in countries such as Malawi and help feed up to 80,000 kids a day.
