After 70,000 sign a petition against the lenient sentence handed down to his son’s killer, Crown Office call with an offer to meet dad Kevin
TRAGIC Shaun Woodburn’s family have won a meeting with law chiefs to seek justice for the young dad.
The prosecutors’ offer of a meeting followed mounting pressure after Shaun’s teenage killer was sentenced to just four years’ detention.
More than 70,000 people have signed a petition calling for Lord Advocate James Wolffe to order an appeal against the soft punishment.
Shaun’s dad Kevin welcomed the offer of the meeting yesterday – as photos emerged showing a carefree Shaun in his last hours, celebrating Hogmanay in a Leith pub.
DEFENCE police yesterday warned Tory cuts have jeopardised security at the Faslane nuclear sub base.
The officers who guard MoD sites – including the Clyde base – said they were now below the minimum level of security to protect them from a terror attack.
And they fear terrorists could succeed in a spectacular attack because of cuts to their force.
The numbers have now dropped to about 2300 officers.
Defence Police Federation chairman Eamon Keating said: “MoD sites are now below the minimum level security needed to protect them from a terror attack.
“They are running at the level of maximum risk as a starting point, moving beyond this daily.”
Keating said March’s terror attack on Parliament, in which PC Keith Palmer was killed, proved terrorists were not afraid to attack well-guarded sites.
He added: “We must believe they wouldn’t hesitate to attack military establishments. The risks are evident, yet decisions are being taken that prioritise the bottom line.”
Keating has written to Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson over the matter.
