second-half display against the Brazilians in Orlando.

But the Gers boss says he now has to build a team that’ll allow Windass to be more ruthless in the final third.

Murty said: “Josh is very overt in what he can do – there are great parts to his game.

“He’s an excellent finisher and has pace and power at elite levels.

“But we have to get him to understand himself and the game. We have to utilise those things in a destructive way going forward.

“Sometimes Josh comes too deep to get involved in build-up play.

“I want him more involved in the latter stages of our play. If we do that we’ll utilise him even better.”

Rangers impressed in flashes against Atletico with Kranjcar getting another 45 minutes under his belt.

The Croat has never doubted this team’s character – he just hopes Pedro Caixinha’s successor can finally help them achieve the consistency required to get closer to Celtic at the top of the Premiership.

Kranjcar said: “The gaffer has his own philosophy which he’s trying to implement. But we all know him well from his first period in charge when he steadied the ship. Now it’s going to be his team and his way because this is a big chance for him. We’re all on board.

“The style and system is there. We want to play from the back but we have to be better in Premiership games, especially at home when we tend to dominate. So there are still things to fix.

“I’ve never doubted my team-mates here. We’ve always had character and we want to play for this club. We’re grown men and bright human beings. None of us want to lose or play badly.

“We want to do better in the second part of the season and we’re together with the manager. We must start showing it on the pitch.

“As a team we definitely have to get second place in the league and hopefully win the Scottish Cup. I’m now more positive we can do it and I’m sure we can close the gap on Celtic.

“We’ve shown what we can do in bits this season. At Parkhead recently we played well as a unit and a team. But we have to be more consistent. This whole club needs consistency and hopefully we can achieve that.” Kranjcar wants to be a regular under Murty having started that 0-0 Old Firm draw – Gers’ last game before their winter trip. But the 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the campaign and admits he has no idea where he’ll be playing next term. He said: “I want to be more involved after the break but it’s up to me to work hard in training and when I get my chance I have to impose myself. “It has been frustrating for me but that’s football. I honestly haven’t even thought about next season. After my injuries every minute I spend on the pitch is a bonus. “I don’t want to look too far ahead. But while I’m here I’ll give everything because I’ve worked really hard to get back in the team. “I want to prove to the manager I’m still good enough to be used at this club. That’s my goal until the end of the season.”
