RUTH David­son ex­plodes an an­tiper­son­nel mine dur­ing a visit to Afghanistan with a char­ity run­ning the world’s largest hu­man­i­tar­ian ex­plo­sive clear­ance op­er­a­tion. The Scots Tory leader spent four days in Kabul with the Halo Trust, based in Dum­friesshire, as they handed back con­trol of 95mil­lion sq m of land to the lo­cal gov­ern­ment after a 10-year scheme to re­move land­mines. David­son ex­ploded the mine after be­ing taught how to find, ex­ca­vate and re­move the lethal de­vices. She praised the trust, say­ing: “Mil­lions of fam­i­lies have been able to re­turn to their home safely thanks to their work.”
