Lee Rigby funds cheat is locked up

BY MARTIN FRICKER A CALLOUS fundraiser who collected cash for Lee Rigby’s son and did not hand over a penny was branded “despicable” as he was jailed yesterday.

Gary Gardner invited the murdered soldier’s widow and son to be “guests of honour” at truckpull events he organised.

The 56-year-old told her he would raise thousands in Lee’s memory and set their son “up for life”.

But Gardner, of Medbourne, Leicestershire, instead spent the cash on a “flop” music single.

He was found guilty of fraud and, sentencing him to 30 months’ jail, Judge Helen Malcolm QC told Gardner: “What you did was undoubtedly dishonest by the standards of ordinary and decent people, and indeed despicable.”
