Lisbon Lion Lennox to be honoured with statue

- BY STUART HODGE

CELTIC legend Bobby Lennox will be honoured with a statue in his home town.

It will be built across from Bobby’s Bar, the pub once owned by the Lisbon Lion, and 50 yards from where the footballer was born in Saltcoats, Ayrshire.

Sculptor John McKenna, who created the Billy McNeill and Jock Stein statues outside Celtic Park and Jimmy Johnstone’s in the memorial garden in Viewpark, Lanarkshire, was commissioned for the project.

It’s hoped the statue, which will show Lennox turning away as if he’s just scored a goal, will be completed in the coming weeks and unveiled before the end of the year.

Lennox, 75, said: “It’s very humbling that the community could think enough of me to erect a statue. I can’t really believe it.”

Dean McMillan, from the campaign’s organising committee, said: “We’re talking about one of the legends of Scottish football.

“To have everything confirmed that it’s really happening is tremendous. I’m really chuffed for Bobby as a person.”
