Celts start to look like contenders

- BY ANDREW SOUTHWICK

CELTIC set their stall out as title contenders with a 4-0 thumping of Forfar Farmington on the opening day of the SWPL season.

Sarah Ewens took just three minutes to put Celtic ahead with an easy finish following Keeva Keenan’s long throw-in.

Josephine Giard finished after a good through ball from Natalie Ross who then scored twice either side of half-time.

She forced in her first off the bar when she met Ewens’s cross then turned brilliantly in the box to finish high into the top corner.

Motherwell began their top-flight campaign with a win as captain Kerry Montgomery’s long-range shot was enough to give them all three points against Stirling University.

There was frustration for last year’s runners-up Hibs who had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Spartans.

Glasgow City against Rangers was postponed, with City revealing in a statement it was due to the “sudden bereavement within the GCFC family”.

They thanked Rangers for their “co-operation and understanding at this difficult time”.

Dundee United were denied a win in their debut season in SWPL 2.

Laurie Denney found the net with a 20-yard lob but 17-year-old Ellie Cowie earned St Johnstone a draw.

Hearts fought back from going a goal behind to beat Hamilton thanks to a Rachel Walkingshaw strike and a Danni Pagliarulo penalty.

Glasgow Girls and Partick Thistle finished scoreless while Hutchison Vale’s clash with Kilmarnock was called off due to an unplayable pitch.
