Wonder goal? I feared I’d get clobbered

Dobbie admits stunner was instinct

- BY SCOTT BURNS

STEPHEN DOBBIE has revealed his fear of being tackled led to him letting fly for his wonder goal at Aberdeen on Sunday. The prolific Queen of the South striker scored one of the strikes of the season with his 30-yard screamer in their 4-1 defeat at Pittodrie to take his tally to 38 goals for the campaign.

The veteran was pleased with his effort but knows it means little because it was nothing more than a consolation.

Dobbie said: “Lyndon Dykes laid it off and I took a couple of touches forward then I heard someone shout ‘man on’ and I thought he was going

to catch me so I just went for it. Luckily it went in.

“It is up there but it was nothing more than a consolation.

“The more meaningful goals come when you actually achieve something and win.”

Nevertheless the goal took Dobbie a step closer to breaking Queens’ scoring record and it would hardly be a surprise to see it smashed before the end of the month.

The former Swansea ace said: “I am just enjoying my football and all the boys around me are doing all my running for me.

“This season they have kept coming. I have been trying to break the Queens’ record. I need another four, so that is my aim.”

The Doonhamers must now concentrate on league matters.

Gary Naysmith’s side are well placed for the play-offs but Dobbie knows another slip-up could lead to them looking over their shoulder.

Dobbie said: “We now have a big two weeks now so hopefully we can take near maximum points.”
