FAT CATS IN HEALTH HIT
BRITAIN’S portly pets are suffering from a rise in diabetes because they are getting so fat.
Research has shown that the condition has risen overall by over
355% between 2015 and
2017 in cats and dogs. Cats are at the highest risk of contracting diabetes with a 309% increase since 2015, compared to a 275% jump for pooches. The breed of canine most commonly diagnosed with the condition is the West Highland Terrier, while household moggies are the cats most in danger.
One of the major causes of diabetes is obesity. A study in 2015 by People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals showed that 80% of vets asked by the charity predicted there would be even more obese animals by 2020.
