Daily Star Sunday - - RESULT! -

THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE is back this week – but don’t expect Paul Pogba to be the competition’s biggest star.

Why? Because the Manchester United midfielder doesn’t appear to see it that way. He is clearly backing his World Cup-winning team-mate Kylian Mbappe, 19, to continue to shine on the big stage. And if he does that could be bad news for Liverpool, who are first up to face Mbappe and his Paris Saint-Germain team-mates at Anfield on Tuesday. Pogba, 25, said: “Kylian has much more talent than I have. Have you seen what he can do at his age? I never had that level of ability.” There are, of course, plenty of others who’ll back themselves to be headline acts in Europe this year. Cristiano Ronaldo, now with Juventus after winning the competition four times with Real Madrid, will be looking to take his success to Italy. His old rival Lionel Messi will be striving to restore Barcelona to the pinnacle in Europe and then there’s Mbappe’s PSG colleague Neymar.

And the cast list doesn’t end there, either. Gareth Bale, for instance, will have the platform to be the main man at Real following Ronaldo’s departure.

But pacy Mbappe (left) will be a player in a hurry to continue a success story which has even Pogba impressed. PAUL HETHERINGTON JOSE
