MANDY MISERY HELPS SAVE TOTS

- EXCLUSIVE by ED GLEAVE

A HOLLYOAKS plot is helping prevent unborn babies developing a crippling condition.

The soap is focusing on spina bifida which affects the growth of a child’s spine and spinal cord in the womb. Mandy Richardson, played by Sarah Jayne Dunn, left, has discovered her baby has it. Increased awareness is likely to mean it could help mums avoid it happening to them.

Mark Kerr, a spokesman at spina bifida charity Shine, said: “The storyline is helping educate people about the effects of spina bifida.

“Long-standing research has proven that you can greatly reduce the chances of spina bifida developing during pregnancy by taking a folic acid supplement at least three months prior to conception, but not enough is done to promote this.

“By putting the condition in the spotlight we hope people will be inspired to learn more about spina bifida and its prevention.”

The storyline has developed over the past fortnight and has already led to a spike in interest for Shine.

Mark added: “Since the first episode aired we’ve seen a 64% rise in new membership applications compared to the same period 12 months ago.

“The show reaches a younger audience, those most in need of information and we’ve every confidence given the show’s long history of showcasing disabled talent that the story is in great hands.” Actress Sarah, 37, has also had a big reaction online from people affected by spina bifida.

She said: “I’ve had lots of people getting in touch. I’ve had messages from mums who have children with spina bifida and also from women who have sadly had terminations because they found out their babies had spina bifida.

“It is emotional to hear their stories. And you feel a responsibility because you’re working on something that directly affects people. It’s a privilege to be involved in this storyline.”
