TERRIFIED tourists fear a monster killer shark is prowling the waters off Mallorca after a holidaymaker fought it off.

The victim was left bleeding and shocked after the third shark incident in the area in recent weeks.

HOLIDAYING Brits were on the alert last night after the third sighting of a killer shark in Mallorca in recent weeks.

Horrified sunbathers looked on as a swimmer fought off the 6ft beast just feet from the shoreline at the weekend.

The tourist was left traumatised and bleeding from his arm at Estanys beach in Colònia de Sant Jordi in the southeast of the island.

Witnesses says he staggered from the sea as coastguards fought to steer the shark back into deeper waters.

Island authorities asked for a Spanish naval vessel to be dispatched to the area to protect bathers.

Experts from the Palma Aquarium were also put on standby.

Mallorca has been plagued by big shark scares so far this summer.

On June 25, another 6ftlong shark sparked panic on the beaches of Calvià and Palma.

Marine experts managed to track the beast down and it later died.

The second sighting was on July 9 when a tourist spotted a “pretty big” shark in the water off the beach of Cala Major.

He called the emergency services but there was no sign of the beast when they reached the scene.

Experts say it is possible that the latest sighting may be the same shark.

After Saturday’s attack, lifeguards hoisted their red warning flags on all nearby beaches.

But local police say they were left shocked as beachgoers flouted the ban and still ventured into the water to cool off.
