Bail for horror crash driver

-

A LORRY driver appeared in court yesterday charged with causing eight deaths by dangerous driving.

David Wagstaff, 53, spoke only to correct the registration number of the lorry he was driving during a horrific crash on the M1 last month.

It was the worst tragedy on Britain’s roads in almost 25 years.

Six men and two women died when a minibus collided with two lorries at Newport Pagnell, Bucks.

Wagstaff, from Stoke, who was driving a white Mercedes lorry, was also charged with four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was released on bail to appear at Aylesbury Crown Court on September 26.

Andy Callander, prosecuting, said he had an “impeccable character”.

The driver of the other lorry, Ryszard Masierak, 31, of Evesham, Worcs, will appear on the same date, facing similar charges as well as eight of causing death by careless driving while over the limit.

It is alleged that Masierak stopped his HGV in lane one. A RUGBY shirt worn by Francis Fox, one of England’s 1890 Calcutta Cup-winning team, is likely to raise £28,000 at auction.
