BUT SHOULD BRIT QUIT?

San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. He was just 34.

Michael Schumacher is the most successful driver of all time with seven world titles, but we will never know how many more Senna might have won than the three he collected.

Hamilton and rival Sebastian Vettel are the only people on the planet currently capable of overhauling Schumacher.

The Brit matched Vettel’s four world titles a little more than a fortnight ago.

But when the dust settles on his latest triumph and the champagne stops flowing at the end of this season, Hamilton might want to consider Senna again and think about the unthinkable – retirement. There is no shame in calling time on a career at the peak of your powers. Eric Cantona did it. So did boxer Rocky Marciano and Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz. Even closer to home for Hamilton, his former Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg (inset) won his first and only world title then promptly quit racing. All of them had their own reasons – but quitting while ahead is what some of the sharpest brains in world sport have chosen to do. Hamilton seemingly has no intention of taking his foot off the gas.

“I believe I can win more championships,” he said.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have had this incredible career, working with amazing people.

Great

“I don’t know what the future holds but I definitely do know that I will apply myself the same as I have this year and try to raise my game even more.”

Hamilton has nothing left to prove. He is already a legend of F1 and a true great of British sport at the age of 32.

He has untold wealth and going on to achieve even more in F1 would be nothing more than him
