Cig app ‘checks’ face ID
SUPERMARKETS are bringing in facial recognition to replace age checks for items such as cigarettes and alcohol.
Checkouts will be able to confirm someone’s age using an app called Yoti, that scans faces.
Currently store assistants must still check the IDs of shoppers.
The phone app works by combining a person’s photograph with details from their passport.
It is then able to confirm its owner’s identity by them taking a selfie. Four supermarkets will trial the technology next year.
