O’BRIEN FEARS RAIN
AIDAN O’BRIEN trainer of the Investec Derby hot favourite Saxon Warrior expressed fears about the recent heavy rain at Epsom.
“We’d like nice ground for our Derby horses as soft ground wouldn’t be ideal for any of them,” said O’Brien, who is expected to have six runners in Saturday’s race.
“We’ll see what happens with the weather overnight and decide in the morning how many of them will run.”
Epsom clerk of the course Andrew Cooper was bracing himself for more rain today and, despite the track being free-draining, expects the ground to be good to soft at best on Saturday.
John Gosden, trainer of Roaring Lion, is also worried about the ground for the second favourite.
“Soft ground is not ideal for Roaring Lion but it does drain well at Epsom,” said Gosden.
“So if it’s good to soft that would be okay as he’s handled that in the past.”
Gosden is now toying with the idea of running Sevenna Star in the Epsom Classic.
“I wouldn’t think he’d handle somewhere like Epsom if it was quick ground as he’s a big horse,” added Gosden. “But he might if it was very soft.”
The Sandown Classic Trial winner is now 10-1 from 20-1 with Coral.
