GARETH SOUTHGATE deserved his new England contract. But why do we keep giving out these long-term deals to the coach?

I think we get carried away sometimes. We do it all the time. I’m pleased for him but his team got ripped apart at home to Spain not so long ago.

It just seems like whenever England do well the FA dish out another big contract and then it isn’t long before they end up paying the guy off again. I hope that doesn’t happen this time. But I just think you should be grateful to be England manager. It’s the greatest honour. A rolling contract should be enough.

It’s OK if they stick with him – and they should stick with him even if we have a rough patch – because his job now is all about getting these young players ready for the next World Cup.

But will they?

I’m glad Gareth (above) picked James Maddison, Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho. They need to go into 2022 with a load of caps under their belts.

But they need to be brought in gently. I would rather see them given 15 or 20 minutes at the end against Spain on Monday than be thrown to the lions from the start.
