Doug was great man

Daily Star - - SERIOUSLY FOOTBALL -

DOUG ELLIS was the heart and soul of Aston Villa and I was really sad to hear he passed away this week.

He was brilliant, an absolutely top guy and was very good to me at Villa. He treated me like one of his sons.

Sometimes he got a bit of stick but I don’t know why. He always had the club’s best interests at heart and spent a lot of money on it.

He was one of a kind, really. Everything you did, he had to do it better. He used to tell you he invented the overhead kick!

I first met him in 1998 when I signed for the club and he always had time for everybody. When I lived in Birmingham he lived over the road.

I often used to pop in for a cup of tea. He was Villa through and through. There’s been no-one since Doug who loved the club like he did.

The last time I saw him he was in a wheelchair and not doing so well. It was a bit of a choker and he will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace, Doug.
