■ PRIME Min­is­ter Boris John­son met Ger­man Chan­cel­lor An­gela Merkel as Brexit D-Day moves closer.

The two sat in si­lence as they lis­tened l to their coun­tries’ na­tional n an­thems in Ber­lin be­fore get­ting down to busi­ness. ■ Mr John­son re­peated his call for the Ir­ish border back­stop plan to be scrapped, while Miss Merkel told her coun­ter­part he had 30 days to come up with an al­ter­na­tive. Yes­ter­day the PM also re­peated his de­ter­mi­na­tion to keep to the planned Brexit date.

■ He tweeted: “We’re go­ing to leave the EU on Oc­to­ber 31st and make this coun­try the best in the world to live in.”

Mr John­son heads to Paris to­day to meet French Pres­i­dent Em­manuel Macron on the sec­ond leg of his Euro­pean charm of­fen­sive.
