Labour’s Em raps ‘total lie’

Daily Star - - NEWS -

■ LABOUR’S Emily Thornberry has denied a claim that she told a party colleague: “I’m glad my constituents aren’t as stupid as yours.”

Caroline Flint told Sky News that Ms Thornberry, left, made the comment to an MP whose constituency voted to leave the EU in the Brexit referendum.

■ Refuting the allegation, she tweeted: “The quote Caroline attributed to me today is a total and utter lie.

“I’ve never said that to anyone, nor anything like it, nor would I ever think it.

■ “I once told Michael Fallon: ‘You can’t just go round making things up.’ Whatever our differences, let’s not sink into that gutter.”

Ms Flint, who was voted out in Don Valley, South Yorks, after 22 years, was critical of Labour’s “ardent Remainers” as a key reason behind the party’s landslide defeat on Thursday that saw it lose 59 seats.

■ Ms Thornberry was believed to be consulting lawyers to get a retraction from Ms Flint.
