Do­main Road Vine­yard, The Wa­ter Race Dry Ries­ling, Ban­nock­burn, Cen­tral Otago 2015 95 MB 95 RG 94 RJ 96

£14.70 Lanch­ester, Tan­ners Do­main Road pro­duces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardon­nay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Ries­ling. Orig­i­nally a 6.5ha es­tate, own­ers Graeme and Gillian Cros­bie pur­chased an­other 10ha in 2011 and aim to con­vert all vine­yards to or­gan­ics. This Ries­ling is named af­ter the wa­ter races which took place dur­ing the gold rush days in Cen­tral Otago.

MB Pure, el­e­gant and sleek. Both con­cen­trated fruit aro­mas and acid­ity sit har­mo­niously to­gether, pro­vid­ing in­cred­i­ble ap­peal. Lovely min­er­al­ity, pre­ci­sion, slightly sweet fruit and a lovely flo­ral edge.

RG Pure lime cit­rus and ap­ple abound in this Ries­ling. It is firm, dry and taut with some phe­no­lic grip. Medium con­cen­tra­tion and a rather as­sertive con­clu­sion, de­spite its time in bot­tle.

RJ A beau­ti­ful nose, with del­i­cate sweet­ness, is evolv­ing beau­ti­fully. This is a class act. The fruit is pris­tine, the tex­ture and length per­fect. This is an awe­some Ries­ling!

Prophet’s Rock, Pinot Gris, Cen­tral Otago 2015 95 MB 95 RG 95 RJ 95

Exel This small win­ery was set up in 1999 and en­com­passes two vine­yards in the Bendigo sub-re­gion. Home Vine­yard has al­ti­tude and a long di­ur­nal range, while Rocky Point has free-drain­ing schist soils. This Pinot Gris is sourced from both sites, the blend of two ter­roirs giv­ing it a unique flavour pro­file. Head wine­maker Paul Pu­jol has made wine all around the world, from Ore­gon to Cham­bolle-Musigny.

MB A beau­ti­fully aligned Pinot Gris. Se­duc­tive aro­mas of pear, stone fruit and crushed flow­ers. Un­folds with pre­ci­sion and poise; nut­ti­ness adds an edge of round­ness. Se­duc­tive, beau­ti­ful and har­mo­nious.

RG The nose dances with laven­der and honey. Of­fers bal­ance and a sense of Old World savouri­ness, de­spite its sweet op­u­lence. Sen­si­tively made and poised. Honey and baked ap­ple linger on the medium fin­ish.

RJ Sweet fruited but balanced, with pu­rity and min­er­al­ity. Tex­tured and lay­ered, this is a balanced wine, which holds the al­co­hol well and has aged well. It de­liv­ers a per­fect cross be­tween Al­sace and New World.

Kumeu River, Pinot Gris, Kumeu 2016 95 MB 96 RG 93 RJ 96

£12.99-£13.99 DBM Wines, Tan­ners, The New Zealand Cel­lar, The Ox­ford Wine Com­pany, The Wine So­ci­ety Kumeu River’s 30ha es­tate is lo­cated in Kumeu, just north of Auck­land. It is owned by the Bra­jkovich fam­ily, who em­i­grated from Croa­tia in 1937 and bought the prop­erty in 1944. To­day the win­ery pro­duces 250,000 bot­tles a year and is fa­mous for its Chardon­nays, as well as mak­ing Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.

MB A poised ex­pres­sion of Pinot Gris, with just the right amount of every­thing – fruit, acid and depth, with per­son­al­ity and def­i­ni­tion – a beau­ti­fully made wine at this price point.

RG A firm and pow­er­ful Pinot Gris with a taut palate, that’s rem­i­nis­cent of al­mond and baked ap­ple. Great ten­sion present, which will take time to come around.

RJ This clas­sic, tex­tured Al­sace Pinot Gris de­liv­ers fresh­ness and fruit in a per­fect har­mony, with del­i­cate hon­ey­suckle and spice notes. Clean but lay­ered palate. Great value but needs time.

Te Kairanga, Ries­ling, Mart­in­bor­ough 2016 MB 95 RG 94 RJ 96

Biben­dum, Exel Es­tab­lished in 1984 by the found­ing fa­ther of Mart­in­bor­ough, John Martin, this es­tate com­prises a 105ha vine­yard and a 130-year-old cot­tage. The size of the es­tate and its var­ied ter­roir al­low a range of va­ri­eties to be planted – in­clud­ing Pinot Noir, Chardon­nay, Ries­ling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris – with a huge diver­sity of styles pro­duced. The Ries­ling is planted on a site where low rain­fall and deep gravel soils con­trib­ute to its unique char­ac­ter.

MB A pure and pris­tine ex­am­ple of Ries­ling. Highly ap­peal­ing – what a plea­sure to sam­ple! Pris­tine fruit, crisp lemon, min­eral and wet stone, plenty of per­son­al­ity and fine edges – sim­ply beau­ti­ful!

RG Vi­va­cious and lemony bright, with a taut, ex­pres­sive fin­ish. Pun­gent and full-throt­tled.

RJ Bright, clean and fo­cused with lovely pu­rity and fresh­ness lin­ger­ing. Del­i­cate and fine fruit – and a lovely pure cit­rus fin­ish.
