Closure of golf club is not a surprise

Derby Telegraph - - LETTERS -

THE announcement that the Maywood Golf Club, at Risley, will close at the end of March, 2019, is disappointing but comes as no surprise.

When it opened in 1990 as a ninehole course and expanded to 18 a couple of years later, it was a wellmaintained and thriving club with a friendly and happy membership.

Matters began to change when the running of the club changed.

The owners appeared to forget that the members were their paying customers.

The course was altered and they ignored the fact that the majority of the members are pensioners with high handicaps.

Needless to say, members were soon finding the narrow fairways and high rough difficult and were losing numerous golf balls.

Since the new regime has been in place two large groups of members have left the club because of hostility between members and owners, so it comes as no surprise that the club is doomed. J G Hollander, Sandiacre
