TEN THINGS YOU MAY KNOW ABOUT BUCKFAST ST ABBEY
1: It is the only English medieval monastery to have been restored and used again for its original purpose.
2: There are only 15 monks at the Abbey.
3: The main source of income comes from investments.
4: Although Buckfast still makes the tonic it is a minority shareholder and neither owns the name nor the trademark.
5: With the tonic wine company Buckfast has supported the creation of a nursing home in the Midlands.
6: There are now four accommodation houses at the Abbey - two for retreat, one for groups and the Northgate Hotel.
7: Bees, originally encouraged as source of income, are today kept for research and education.
