To cre­ate a more flat­ter­ing light­ing ef­fect, it helps to dif­fuse the light to make it less harsh. A fantastic low-cost so­lu­tion is to use a sheet of bak­ing pa­per taped to a frame. Ei­ther use a pic­ture frame mi­nus the glass, or cut your own frame out of a piece of card­board. This can be held in front of the desk lamp to cre­ate a wider and softer spread of light, re­duc­ing strong high­lights or shad­ows.
