While the 40x zoom is the main attraction, it’s best to stick to the wide and mid telephoto focal lengths to get better image quality.
In Macro focusing mode the SX740 HS can shoot subjects that are just 1cm from the lens at its widest point, extending its versatility.
The built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity works well, transferring images quite quickly and enabling them to be shared on social media.
Canon has given the SX740 HS five-axis image stabilisation and it does a good job, but it’s hard to get a stable view in the screen at 960mm.
Disappointingly, Canon hasn’t given the SX740 HS touch control. This would be nice for navigating the menu, or setting the AF point.
While the exposure compensation control isn’t completely obsolete, the Evaluative metering system handles most scenes well.
