JORDAN BUTTERS: This proves the importance of framing and good technique when it comes to taking motorsport images that stand out. Shooting from spectator areas presents a challenge ( turn to page 44 for more advice on this), but Simon has used his positioning to his advantage. By finding an elevated position, and shooting over the top of the crowd using a slow shutter speed, he has transformed a messy foreground into an attractive blur. His focusing and panning techniques are good, so the lead car is reasonably sharp, racing away from its competitors. By including the spectators and with considered composition, Simon's shot is an eye- grabbing one that tells more of a story than a straight- on action shot.
