It's worth re­fresh­ing your mem­ory about how cam­eras as­sess the tones in a scene when cal­cu­lat­ing the ex­po­sure. Ev­ery me­ter­ing sys­tem works on the ba­sis that the aver­age of all the tones in a scene equates to a mid- tone of 18% grey. This proves to be re­mark­ably ac­cu­rate for most scenes, but it isn't per­fect, hence the need for cam­eras to have ex­po­sure over­rides to en­sure cor­rect results in trick­ier shoot­ing con­di­tions.
