When I was asked to participate in the celebration of nikon’s 100th anniversary and to shoot a cover image, I felt privileged to be part of it. Deciding on the right location for capturing a beautiful landscape was easy. Porth nanven in Cornwall would be my firm choice as this is an established favourite amongst the photography community, which made it a perfect place to be included in the celebration! who’d have thought that this tiny cove would attract such a worldwide following. Its popularity meant that the classic views had been captured many times before, so it was going to be a challenge to find a standout viewpoint.
a low tide allowed me access to the sandy part of the beach. each tide can affect the dynamics of the various elements of the location and sometimes the dinosaur egg- shaped boulders for which the location is famed can be obscured by shifting sand. That is what happened here, which meant I had an opportunity to take a more simplified composition using the stream that flows down to the sea. I set up my tripod and pushed the legs firmly into the flowing water to help eliminate any risk of movement.
I normally use a nikon D810 but switching over to the D750 for this shoot was a breeze, it felt like a familiar friend with all the controls neatly set out and I found it a joy to use!
I used a nikon af- s 16- 35mm f/ 4G ed VR lens at the wide end of the zoom, which would allow me to capture as much of the reflected light as possible and to emphasise the lead- in line down to the sea and beyond. I added a Lee Filters 0.9nd hard grad filter to help control the exposure and captured the image in manual exposure mode.
Port Nanven in Cornwall is a favourite location of Helen's and her expertise of the area, along with getting the best from her camera, allowed her to capture this stunning coastal sunset.
